Vice President Kamala Harris shares her experience of the moment President Biden called her to announce his exit from the race, disrupting a planned family weekend.
In her first interview since being selected as the Democrats’ presidential candidate, Harris spoke with CNN’s Dana Bash about the pivotal phone call that reshaped the 2024 election landscape.
Harris recounted that she was enjoying a leisurely Sunday, cooking bacon for her nieces and gearing up for a family puzzle, when Biden’s call interrupted her plans.
During the call, Harris learned that Biden would not be running for reelection due to pressures faced after a tough June debate. Her immediate reaction was to verify if it was truly his decision.

Harris noted that Biden was clear in his endorsement of her, so she didn’t need to ask about that. Nonetheless, her initial thoughts were focused elsewhere.
This was the first time Harris publicly discussed the significant phone call, and she kept her comments succinct—just like when Dana Bash asked for her reaction regarding Donald Trump‘s recent racial remarks.
