Vertical Entertainment has unveiled the trailer for Winner, a dark comedy biopic featuring Emilia Jones (known for Locke and Key) in the role of Reality Winner, an American whistleblower and former National Security Agency contractor.
This film, based on real events, is directed by Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me) and seeks to present a fresh perspective on Reality Winner’s narrative, following HBO’s 2023 release, which starred Sydney Sweeney.
Winner is set to premiere in theaters on September 13, 2024. Fogel co-wrote the screenplay with Kerry Howley in addition to her directing role.
What does the Winner Trailer reveal?
The trailer offers a glimpse into Reality’s formative years in Texas and her service with the U.S. Air Force, which opened the door to her work with the NSA. It hints that the film will delve into the implications of Reality Winner’s choice to leak documents detailing the Russian government’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 U.S. elections.

The official synopsis for Winner is as follows:
“Reality Winner is an intelligent young outsider from a Texas border town with a passion for her pink gun and helping others. After self-learning Arabic in high school to assist in the Middle East, she gets recruited by the Air Force but quickly becomes disillusioned by ethical dilemmas. Transitioning to a well-paying job as an NSA contractor, Reality uncovers classified information about Russia’s interference in the 2016 Presidential elections. Faced with the choice of silence or exposure, she ultimately decides to reveal the truth, leading to her trial and a landmark espionage sentencing.”
Joining Jones in the film are Connie Britton as Billie Winner, Danny Ramirez as Andre, Kathryn Newton as Brittany Winner, and Zach Galifianakis as Ron Winner.
Winner will be available in select theaters and On Demand starting September 13.
