The term “Free Jazz” typically refers to an adventurous style of jazz that often breaks away from the conventions of traditional forms. However, today’s focus is on a different type of Free Jazz—one that truly is free! That’s right; all the performances mentioned here are completely complimentary, thanks to the wonderful team at Coastal Jazz. Just read this article and show up to enjoy the music at no cost.
The Peggy Lee Band
While I’m unsure of the exact year, I believe I first saw The Peggy Lee Band at Jazz Fest back in 1998. Peggy Lee has been a cornerstone of the Jazz Festival for even longer and has performed in numerous ensembles throughout the decades. This talented group features some of Vancouver’s top musicians and has produced six albums, showcasing exquisite jazz, folk, and chamber music.

Kjetil Mulelid Trio
Kjetil Mulelid has gained a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting pianists, making his debut at our Jazz Festival all the more special. His latest album, *Agoja*, has earned a level of admiration akin to that of the best ECM releases.

Biboye Onanuga
Earlier this year, Edmonton’s drummer Biboye Onanuga wowed Vancouver audiences with two sold-out performances. One was a tribute to Max Roach alongside local trumpeter Feven Kidane, while the other featured him at Frankie’s After Dark with Chad Galpin and Christopher Fraser. Local fans now have another chance to see why he’s regarded as one of Canada’s top drummers at Ocean Artworks, where he’ll reunite with Galpin and Fraser, along with keyboardist Josh Krushel.

Cat Toren/John Korsrud Quintet
Our city has produced an impressive array of musicians, and this supergroup featuring Cat Toren, John Korsrud, Andre Lachance, John Nicholson, and Kevin Romain stands out. Each member is a bandleader in their own right, but it is Toren and Korsrud—of Pugs & Crows and Hard Rubber Orchestra fame—who spearhead this innovative collaboration.
